A new primary school will open in Wanaka in 2020 to serve the growing population in the Upper Clutha region. The new school is currently known as Wanaka South, though this name will change, and will be situated in the Three Parks development adjacent to the new Wanaka Recreation Centre.

The opening of the new school will require the establishment of enrolment zones for the existing Wanaka Primary School and the new school. The Ministry of Education has been leading discussions with the boards of both the current primary school and the new school. Today both boards have released the proposed enrolment zones.

Dr Ian Hall, Chair of the Establishment Board for the new school, confirmed that the school will open in 2020 for students in years 1-6. Parents, whanau, and caregivers will be able to pre-enrol students during 2019. “We’re pleased to have reached this significant milestone in the development of the new school,” Dr Hall said.

Andrew Howard, Chair of the Wanaka Primary School Board, said, “The Board of Trustees at Wanaka Primary will be allowing current students and younger siblings of those students to continue attending Wanaka Primary School. This arrangement will ensure minimal disruption in the transition period.”

A meeting to provide further information to the community on the proposed enrolment zones will be held at 7.00pm on 4 December in the staffroom at the Wanaka Primary School and will be hosted by the boards of both schools.
